The participants got lucky in Chuxiong as the clouds had already dropped all their rain before the start of the short race climbing up Mount Zixi. Myagmarsuren Baasaankhuu took yellow over from Jia Zhichao, while Solongo Tserenlham grabbed the stage in the final metres.
The pavement in the old town was still slippery as riders got underway. There was some commotion in the neutralised zone as the front wheel of female yellow jersey Solongo Tserenlham suddenly slipped on an oil spot and she went down taking a few others with her. Fortunately, nobody got hurt or suffered and major damage. Riders from Team Rion set the pace mostly on the flat road to the foot of Mount Zixi, the mountain with an altitude of 2350m above sea level. A few skirmishes including Pu Jinxie and Tegshee notwithstanding, it was only when Miga attacked that real gaps emerged in the peloton. Yellow jersey Jia Zhichao was immediately struggling to keep up. He fought hard but lost three minutes and therefore had to let go of yellow. Miga was clearly the best climber. Nicolas Magany and Teghsee were his closest rivals uphill. Teghsee suffered a gear shift issue and saw Magany riding away. In the end, Miga decided to let Magany return to the front and the Team Rion duo crossed the finish line together, the Canadian slightly ahead.
Until the last few hundreds of metres it looked as if Dutch rider Kristin Kofman would win the women's race, but then Mongolia's Solongo Tserenlham returned all of a sudden and still nicked it.
